1a What is a Travel Plan?

A Travel Plan is a way of managing how people travel to a particular area or organisation. It may consist of a single initiative, such as encouraging car sharing or may use a co-ordinated package of measures to encourage different ways of travelling.

Whatever initiatives you choose to introduce they will be unique to your organisation.

A Travel Plan can address:

  • staff travel to and from the workplace
  • staff travel made during the course of your company business
  • travel by visitors
  • the fuel efficiency of your company fleet
  • deliveries to and from the site

A Travel Plan will usually include initiatives that can reduce the number of people who drive alone. These can include:

  • promoting public transport, walking and cycling
  • managing use of the car by reducing the demand for and use of car parking spaces, encouraging car sharing and considering how employees travel on business
  • introducing alternative work practices, including working from home and compressed working weeks
