2a Deciding on Objectives of the Travel Plan

All the objectives should be made clear and promoted to staff and all users of the site. When deciding on the objectives of the plan, you need to consider which problems you want to address, and whether the plan will focus on commuter travel, business travel, fleet management, etc.

Typical objectives may be to:

  • reduce costs associated with providing staff parking
  • reduce business mileage claims
  • overcome the loss of car parking provision
  • increase opportunities to recruit and retain staff
  • reduce congestion in and around the site
  • increase the number of staff/visitors accessing the
    site by non-car modes
  • improve the image of the organisation
  • promote a healthier and more productive workforce
  • reduce the impact of your business on the environment
  • promote more sustainable ways of working
  • support government policy to manage travel
    demand more effectively
  • provide alternatives to the car before local authorities act on powers included in the Transport Act 2000 enabling them to introduce road user and workplace parking charges
