6b Establishing User Groups

WHAT IS A USER GROUP?

You can set up user groups which consist of people who use the same mode of transport to travel to and from work or when travelling on company business.

These groups are useful for:

  • providing support for others who wish to use a type of transport, for example cyclists can advise potential cyclists on safe and quick cycle routes
  • giving feedback on the Travel Plan
  • identifying and supporting improvements

Groups should meet as often as they feel appropriate and provide feedback to the Steering Group, Travel Co-ordinator and staff via a newsletter or Intranet.

WHAT TYPE OF USER GROUPS ARE THERE?

All user groups can advise on ways of raising the profile of their particular means of transport.

An example of a user group - Bicycle User Group (BUG)

A BUG is a Bicycle User Group and BUGs in organisations across Greater Manchester have:

  • advised on the cycling strategy which is included in the Local Transport Plan
  • supported national events such as ‘Bike to Work Day’
  • held cycle maintenance clinics

  • negotiated with management for improved storage and shower facilities
  • conducted a cycle audit of their workplace
  • identified safe and fast routes to the workplace
  • identified ‘hotspots’ where improvements can be made
  • negotiated discounts at local cycle shops
  • arranged social events which promote cycling as a leisure activity

BUGs can also provide a ‘Bike Buddy Scheme’ whereby an experienced cyclist travels with a colleague who is inexperienced and requires support.

Car share Coffee Clubs

Car share Coffee Clubs are a way of bringing together groups of potential car sharers. People are arranged in groups according to postcode, which allows them to develop a relationship with potential car sharing partners.

Greater Manchester Travel Co-ordinator Network (TRACK)

The Greater Manchester Travel Co-ordinator Network, known as TRACK, was established in August 2000. Its objectives are to provide a forum to allow the exchange of best practice and the opportunity to solve problems related to Travel Plan development. Members of TRACK will also be consulted on issues that influence Travel Plan development in Greater Manchester. If you would like to attend then please contact the AGMA Travel Co-ordinator on 0161 242 6020.
