6d The Use of Consultants

There may be stages of the work where it is appropriate for you to seek the help of consultants in the development and implementation of the Travel Plan, for example:

  • where professional guidance or support is required
  • where it is more cost effective to out-source the work
  • where it would be more appropriate to have an external body conduct the work because of the sensitivity surrounding the issue

Particular areas where external bodies can provide support are:

  • conducting a site assessment
  • collecting traffic related data
  • facilitating focus groups
  • design and administration of the travel survey
  • entering data and analysing the travel survey
  • advising on appropriate measures
  • developing a business plan
  • evaluating the success of measures
  • producing promotional material
  • developing a marketing and consultation strategy

The level and detail of the work that you require will influence how much it will cost. If you wish to employ a consultant, the following can advise you on how to find a suitable one:

  • local authority travel co-ordinator or the AGMA Travel Co-ordinator
  • local organisation who you know to have developed a Travel Plan

You can ask the consultant to provide details of the work that they have conducted and the contact details of previous clients who you can approach for a reference. It is generally more important to select a consultant who has experience in the field rather than a locally based consultant, although in Greater Manchester there are organisations who fulfil both criteria.
